Before coming to Oxford in 2000 he had held lectureships at the Universities of Bristol and Edinburgh as well as post-doctoral positions at the University of Cambridge and the University of California, San Diego. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge and an undergraduate degree at the University of Adelaide.
