St Anne’s is the home of choice for the brightest and most ambitious students, including those from underrepresented groups.
St Anne’s is one of Oxford’s largest colleges, with over 800 students. Our Fellows’ world leading research ranges across the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and physical, life and medical sciences.
Our diverse, inclusive community extends around the globe through our alumnae, who build on their experiences here to change the world for the better.
Situated within 5 acres of tranquil leafy grounds, St Anne’s enjoys a unique atmosphere in which to hold any conference, dinner or special event.
Teaching in all Asian and Middle Eastern Studies subjects is arranged centrally by the Faculty, and takes place either in the Faculty or the University of Oxford China Centre; the latter is a convenient five minutes’ walk from St Anne’s.
St Anne’s also has a Fellow in AME Studies who acts as personal tutor to all AME Studies students, and we have a good community of undergraduates across a range of AME Studies subjects. Tutorials in Chinese subjects are usually held at St Anne’s; some tutorials in all subjects may be held in external tutors’ colleges. AME Studies subjects are as demanding as they are rewarding, and the support offered in College can make a considerable difference.
Though AME Studies is not a College-based subject, St Anne’s offers particular advantages. Chief among them is the College Library: we have the largest collection of books required for Chinese classes and tutorials, and are among the largest in Japanese. Arabic, Hebrew, Jewish Studies, Turkish, Korean and Tibetan are also well catered for. The library can acquire new books requested by students, often at very short notice.St Anne’s benefits further from being adjacent to St Antony’s College, which contains the Bodleian (main University library) collection in Japanese, as well as the Modern Middle East Centre Library.
AME Studies graduates have a high employment success rate; St Anne’s graduates can be found all over the world, working in sectors as diverse as banking, business, law, government, media, education and charities.
The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is unique for its focus on introducing students to civilisations that are different from the Western ones upon which the curriculum in most British schools and colleges is based.
The various courses offered by the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies present both the major traditions and cultural trends of the regions studied and, in most cases, their modern developments. All courses include a combination of linguistic, literary, historic and cultural studies. There are a wide range of options in fields such as art and archaeology, history, literature, philosophy, religion and modern social studies.

St Anne’s is a down-to-earth, friendly and independent-minded college that takes people for what they are. It is modern in its outlook and architecture and open to the world, informal and yet academically demanding.
