St Anne’s remembers Norman McCubbin, who sadly passed away earlier this week.
Norman was initially part of the teaching faculty at St. Anne’s between 1993-1998, then, after a stint as Visiting Professor at the University of Bristol, he returned to St. Anne’s following his official retirement in 2011 and was teaching until the present time. He was a firm favourite with the students, always going beyond the call of duty. They describe his ability to clearly and simply explain complex problems, which set him apart as a brilliant teacher and a true champion of the world of Physics. He is remembered fondly for his enthusiasm and patience. Many former students had the chance to reconnect with him in recent years at the “50 yrs of St. Anne’s Physics” in 2019 and other celebrations in 2022, which he eagerly helped organise.
In addition to his teaching, Norman was an exceptional and distinguished particle physicist working on a number of experiments including ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. Throughout most of his career Norman was an academic staff member at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where he was the Particle Physics Director from 2007 until his retirement.
For his colleagues at St. Anne’s he was a joy to tutor with, reliable and dependable, and always entertaining. He was generous with his wisdom and advice, ensuring that younger colleagues were able to teach with the best of their ability.
His company will be greatly missed by all of us at college.
